If you said yes to all of the above, then apply for the Dorrance Scholarship. It is an $8000 a year scholarship which is renewable for 8 semesters and estimated to be worth more than $60,000. You will be housed in the dorms your freshman and sophomore year and be able to travel and participate in a lot of cultural enrichment activities, community outreach opportunities and have tutoring and mentoring. The Kea'au High School Counseling Staff and the Transition Center would like to try and provide you with information that will help you to help your child with senior year and post high school decisions. These informal, informational meetings will be held on Tuesday - November 29, 2011 and Thursday - December 8, 2011 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Transition Center (H Building - 2nd floor). We will be on hand to answer your questions on college and scholarship applications, financial aid, Grad Night, etc... No appointment time is necessary. The Hawaii County ronald Reagan Scholarship fund awards college scholarshiips of between $500-$2500 each up to five graduating seniors from public high school in the county of Hawaii. Each applicant must write a printed, typed or word processor essay of at least 1000 words in length. The question is: "Which article of the Bill of Rights do you personally think is the most important in the year 2012 and why do you think it is more important than any of the other Nine Articles? Fully explain your reasoning."

There is going to be a field trip to the 37th Annual College and Career Fair on Thursday - November 10, 2011. We will also be doing a tour of the University of Hawaii at Hilo and Hawaii Community College Campuses. Come to the Transition Center on Tuesday or Thursday to get a permission form. All permission forms must be turned in by Tuesday - November 8th.
There will be only 2 busses or 105 students, so first come first serve.
The College Fair will also be open on Wednesday - November 9th from6-9 pm. You can ask your parents to take you then also.

The College Opportunites Program is an alternative pathway for individuals who desire to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa but who lack the minimum requirements for admission. COP provides a free, intensive 6 week summer academic and residential program, which is designed to prepare individuals for a successful freshman year at UHM. Participants are required to live on campus and enroll in classes focused on upgrading academic and social skills. Room, board, textbooks and instructional expenses are covered by COP. This is a great test to take as is it free and it gives you a lot of practice taking exams and also helps you to figure out what kinds of careers you might be good at. Attention Seniors!
If you are planning to attend Hawaii Community College or any of the community colleges in the fall, you must take the COMPASS placement exam. The Mobile Compass testers will be coming from Kona once a month to administer the exam. Please see Mrs. Yamamoto in the Transition Center for the necessary paperwork that needs to be filled out before you can take the test. Remember the first test is free, after that if you want to retake the test it will cost $25.

ASVAB EXAMS

There are 4 ASVAB exams scheduled for this school year. ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. It is a 3 hour test that will include verbal, math and technical tests. This is the test you need to take if you are planning to go into the Military. This test will also help you to learn more about yourself and your interests and provide you with self interest assessments and career exploration tools. It is a free test that will give you good practice at taking exams. You can go online for practice tests at www.march2success.com, or borrow ASVAB practice tests from our Library. The first ASVAB test is scheduled for Thursday - September 16, 2010 at 8:30 am. Sign up in the Transition Center.
